About
Ontapp is an in-venue order management product for hospitality businesses.
Both easy to use for customers and employees and beautifully engineered to work leanly, Ontapp creates smoother workflows in any restaurant, bar or cafe it is implemented in.
Challenge
The product idea started as a solution to reduce drink ordering time and to make the whole process a bit simpler for clients.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the focus of the app broadened, leading to more sophisticated objectives:
- to create a tool for venues that enables customers to order food and drinks quickly and efficiently,
- at the same time, to help the business staff provide great service and reduce their need to prolonged personal contact with a large number of people.
Solution
Ontapp needed two apps to respond to the two user personas that would be using the product.
Both would be using a dark user interface in order to accommodate the use of the app in clubs and bars, as well as during the night. The dark interface would also suggest a premium service and not distract from the in-venue drinks and menu.
User Experience
A venue’s menu is built with discoverability and findability in mindOntapp needed two apps to respond to the two user personas that would be using the product.
The user has full control over their orderThe order widget at the bottom allows users to always see the order and change the quantity of their items. Moreso, the user can re-order their drinks easily and this reduces the time needed to place an order..
Google Pay and Apple PayUsers can pay their orders fast in the app due to the integration with Apple Pay and Google Pay. As an alternative, users can store their card details and pay with one of their cards directly through the app.

Styleguide
From our first conversations, we knew that the applications would be mostly used in venues with scarce lighting setups. This led us to go with a look that wouldn’t leave an afterimage burned into the users’ retina, and wouldn’t attract unnecessary attention when someone was using the app
Color coding and highlighting main focus areas were the trump cards that allowed us to design an app that is easy to browse and self explanatory from the first order made.
Customer App
The customer facing app serves any customer that walks into the venue that uses Ontapp and downloads the app.
Through the app, the customer can order for themselves, their friends, repeat their order or add to it.
Due to the integration with Apple Pay and Google Pay, the experience of paying for an order is faster than ever.
Business App
To complement the customer app, all orders are monitored and responded through the business app that is run by the venue.
Through it, the staff can receive each order, prepare it, deliver it, mark it as done, and process payments without actually working with cash or POS devices.
This allows the venue staff to concentrate on what’s in front of them: giving great service to the people they have at their tables.
Venue Admin
For the venue management, we built a web admin that allows the team to add venue staff, see reports and manage locations.
For the inventory management, we used Square to reduce the development time and integrated the menu items in the app using Square API.
